Eagles To Remain In Division 1 For 2012

After a bruising encounter against North Heidelberg on Saturday
with a massive 106 point win to consolidate their spot in Division 1 for next season with 4 wins and only 3 rounds remaining. Now the club can start to build and recruit for the 2012 season. In the opening minutes of the game, Todd Behan received a knock to the head and suffered concussion and not long after that Roy Dyson receives a gash to the head thanks to a Liverpool Kiss to the head. At the half time break, the Eagles went in with a 9 goal lead as the Whittlesea Auskick ran onto the oval and gave the large crowd a great exhibition match. In the 3rd term, a scuffle started but full credit to all the boys including the 7 Under 19's boys who were playing never took a backward step and were
not worried by the oppositions tactics and continued to put their head over the ball and won every contest that they were involved in. Congratulations to Joshua Campbell (pictured above) who played his first senior game with the Whittlesea Football Club. Next week the Eagles take on Montmorency in their final home game for this season so please come down and support our local team.

Eagles Take Home The 4 Points With A Great Victory

Round 8 was the longest road trip this season, I don't usually go this far for my holiday's. Finally got to the ground and the next chore was to find somewhere to park my car. After 15 minutes driving around, success. Northcote Park were sitting 2nd on the Division 1 ladder and had beaten quality opposition in previous weeks. In the 1st quarter, Northcote Park had the wind but never took advantage and only led by 3 points at the break. We dominated the 2nd quarter but inaccurate kicking at goal scoring 3 goals 7 and restricting them to only 2 points meant we led by 20 points at the main break. Peter Bugden was pleased with there 1st half efforts but knew there was room for improvement.

The 3rd quarter will determine the result of the game, they had the advantage of the breeze and we needed to restrict there scoring opportunities. Again the Eagles won the quarter if it was by only 2 points but went to the 3/4 time huddle full of confidence with a 22 point lead. Still expecting the Cougars to turn it on in the final term which they did kicking 3 goals in concession reducing the margin to less than a kick. This is where I thought it was all over, but to the boys credit, they never gave in and for the remainder of the match it was goal for goal and at the final siren the Eagles were in front by 9 points with Andrew (Richo) Fairchild kicking a massive 6 goals 10 behinds, I know what he will be doing at training this week, the Eagles proudly walked away with the 4 points which was well deserved. Peter Bugden promised the boys he would shout them all a pot if they won, that was a costly mistake Buggy. Pictured above, young gun Janan Daniel rose high above the pack to pull in a screamer.

     Bundoora Bulls Stampede Eagles

This was never going to be an easy task as they are sitting on top of the division 1 ladder without a loss. The best we could hope was that the loss was not going to be to great and retain what percentage we have, in the end it was only 14 goals which is what Cloke & Moorcroft kicked between them. It is never great to lose but to lose by what we did in front of a massive crowd was a credit to the entire team & coaching staff. Also thanks to Emily from the Star Newspaper for the photo's she sends us to use....

Whittlesea vs Bundoora @ The Showgrounds

Round 7 in the Northern Football League's Division 1 Clash between the Whittlesea Eagles & the Undefeated Bundoora Bulls will be the Eagles biggest test this season. Bundoora gained the services of Cameron Cloke for the 2011 season along with ex bomber Gary Moorcroft. In the 6 rounds thus far, Bundoora has beaten all teams they have played and have scored an average of almost 20 goals a game and only having just over 10 goals a game kicked against them. The Eagles will have there work cut out for them this week but if they wish you remain in Division 1 in 2012, they at least must be competitive in all areas of the game and try and restrict the Bulls to reasonable score. Not taking anything away from Whittlesea, we know they will run out onto the Showground's with the belief that they can win this game, they are a young side and they are at full strength this week.....

The Better Team All Day But Not Good Enough To Win

The Eagles took on last year's Division 1 Premiers in West Preston, the boys got of to a flying start to kick 5 goals in the opening quarter and restricting them to only 2 points. With West Preston having the wind advantage in the 2nd quarter, we allowed then to score 3 goals and kicked 2 ourselves to lead by 25 points at the main break. Our 3rd quarter was the telling factor on the result of the game, we had the advantage of the wind and managed to kick 4 goals but the disappointing thing was that we allowed West Preston to kick 6 goals into the breeze. With only 14 points the difference at 3/4 time, it was going to be hard to hold them. In the final term they added another 7 goals to there score to our 1 goal 1, a poor finish to what was a great display from the entire team.
Pictured left is Eagles No 2, Nick Snowdon who had 26 possessions, 3 Marks and 18 tackles, not a bad days work at the office

A Dirty Day For The Eagles

Round 5 and all 3 teams had to venture to Montmorency to take on the Magpies who were yet to win a game. The conditions were pretty average after the rain with large areas just mud. Under 19's only had 18 players due to injuries within the seniors. Never the less, the boys played their hearts out but were not strong enough to take the 4 points. The reserves also had 14 players until 6 former players put their hands up and played. Thanks to Andrew Draper, Daniel Holmes, Matt Keily, Paul Perkins, Tim Ireland  & Lee Murray. The scores didn't reflect the game as the boys had a red hot go and played some great footy. In the main game, a poor 1st quarter cost us the game, an 8 goal to 1 1st quarter was very disappointing as we one the next 3 quarters.

Eagles Back To Earth With A Thud

Round 3, Whittlesea took on Greensborough at the Showground's, Both teams were undefeated going into the game but we soon realised that we were unable to match them in their team work and attack at the footy. An 8 goal to 3 first quarter meant that we had to play catch up footy all day. It didn't help our cause having a goalless 2nd quarter as Greensborough extended the lead out to 50 points at half time. Then in the 2nd half we were undisciplined giving away stupid free kicks and receiving yellow cards. There a couple of positive things that came out of the game, they were we out scored them in the final term, our young guys played some great footy and Rocky Collins took a couple of screamers one is pictured left.       Contenders Or Pretenders

Our 1st road trip in Division 1 was to the kennel as it is known to take on North Heidelberg. The Eagles got off to a flying start to lead at 1/4 time by 33 points but were aided by a strong breeze. The 2nd quarter will tell the story as the Bulldogs had the wind at their back. The Eagles were relentless in their attack at the footy, the tackle count was high not allowing the opposition an easy disposal and we kept the lead of 33 pints at 1/2 time.

We had the wind advantage in the 3rd quarter were we played some of our best footy adding a further 4 goals to our total and restricting them to only the 2. The wind increased in the final term but the Eagles were still full of run and not giving the opposition an inch. We outscored them again in the final term and extended the lead out to 64 points as the final siren sounded. A terrific win by all concerned and now a weeks rest due to Easter and then it's Greensborough at the Showground's in Round 3, April 30th...

Eagles Home By A Point In A Thriller In Round 1

The day started with the unfurling of our 2010 Premiership Flag, Then it was down to business. This was the club's first official game in Division 1 & it was to be against our arch rivals in Macleod who have had the wood over us for a number of years. At 3/4 Time, the Eagles trailed Macleod by 37 points but we had the advantage of a strong northerly in the final term. With a terrific last quarter by the entire team managed to turn a 37 point deficit into a 1 point victory and after the game sung the club song with pride.

Saturday was also the day the club got to unfurl the Northern Football Leagues Division 2 "A" Grade Premiership Flag. A great day for Whittlesea and the history of the Whittlesea Football & Netball Club.
